Columbia City Haunted Jail - Reviews Tickets:
History of Old Whitley Jail:
The Columbia City Jail was built in 1875 by J.C. A person named Johnson got it done. This amazing brick building, originally called Whitley Jail because it's in that county, has three floors and is really fancy.
Johnson made sure to add special details like carved sandstone, dormers (those little windows on the roof), and a special type of roof called a mansard roof.
When they completed construction, the site became the local jail and sheriff's house. The sheriff lived in the same building with the prisoners, making it easy for him to keep an eye on them.
This constant monitoring ensured that prisoners did not cause more problems or do anything wrong while in custody.
Old Whitley Prison was used for almost 200 years. It was not just a jail and sheriff's house, but also served as a court.
This made it convenient to handle criminals and court cases as both the buildings were connected, thereby avoiding the hassle of traveling for legal cases.
Later, when a new courthouse was built about a block away, Whitley Jail was no longer needed for court purposes.
What happens to old jail when it is no longer needed? Well, after the jail was no longer in use, it became a location for the county offices.
These offices remained there until the building became really old and the heating system stopped working in 1985.
The place was vacant until 1991 when someone saw an opportunity to buy it. Instead of fixing it up, the new owner, who was a car dealer nearby, turned it into a haunted house where people visit once a year.
The Columbia City Jail got a new name and reworking – now it's a scary haunted house that's been scaring people for over two decades! Apart from the fun of Halloween, scary incidents also happen at other times.
While it's good for scaring people, some locals want it to go back to its original form.
They're working to snatch it from the current owner and turn it back into the impressive brick prison it used to be.
People who care about our community think it is a good idea for the city to purchase the old jail. They want to fix it up and make it as it was in 1875 when it first opened. Their plan is to turn it into a fantastic museum that can be used for different things throughout the year.
If we don't do something soon, the old prison may continue to collapse. People here really hope that the person who now owns it will either take better care of it or let someone else take care of it.
The Columbia City Jail - Hauntings Tour:
The Columbia City Jail isn't just an old jail that's been transformed into a scary Halloween haunted house.
This is truly one of the scariest places in Indiana, with lots of stories about ghosts and strange things happening. People say they have seen ghosts and felt scary things going on over the years.
A long time ago, in the history of this prison, there is a story about a man named Charles Butler. Charles had a chance at a good life.
He was married to Abby and had a son. But Charles was not a good person. He loved drinking and used to threaten people.
He had a very bad temper and often misbehaved with his wife and child. Sadly, conditions became even worse in 1883.
Charles shot his wife in the back while she was trying to protect their son from him. Some people say that even today Charles is afraid of being in jail.
Charles Butler was caught and jailed in the old Whitley County Jail. The person in charge of the jail at that time was Sheriff Frank Allwyn.
While Butler was in prison, five prisoners managed to escape, and he was one of them.
Butler enjoyed his freedom for some time, but eventually they caught up with him. He was declared guilty of murder and given death penalty.
The events surrounding his execution are believed to be the reason behind many ghostly occurrences in the prison.

Charles Butler was sentenced to death. When they led him to the gallows and opened the trap door, he did not fall immediately and broke his neck.
Instead, he hung there and couldn't breathe for about 10 minutes. Officers eventually took him down and he died inside the prison about three minutes later.
People who have visited the Columbia City Jail say that they feel the presence of many spirits in the old building.
Some people believe that the ghosts of the prisoners who were hanged are still alive and are unable to move.
It is said that a particular ghost, Charles Butler, is always around. People feel a strong electrical presence upon entering, and many report their cameras malfunctioning or their fully charged batteries draining quickly.
Some people even claim to have seen the ghost of Charles Butler standing outside the prison. It has been suggested that he may have been unable to leave the place where he died so tragically.
Some people, including Charles Butler, think that Sheriff Allwyn's spirit is still in the jail.
Ghost hunters who have visited the old jail say they have seen a ghostly figure moving from the jail area toward the sheriff's living quarters.
People have also claimed to feel that they are being watched while sitting in an old prison cell. They have heard footsteps approaching and passing down the hall.
Another strange thing is that any door opens automatically without anyone's help. All of these experiences lead some people to believe that Sheriff Allwyn's presence still lingers in the jail.
While investigating a haunted place, a person investigating felt as if something touched her leg and went up to her knee while she was sitting in a closet. But when others looked with bright light, there was no one else in the room.
While they were in one of the front rooms of the old jail, the entire investigation team heard strange things, like a man laughing, knocking sounds and the sound of someone running.
They also felt someone brushing over them or passing by them, and they saw the curtains moving, even though there was no wind or anyone to move them.
Not only the paranormal team, but also the people have experienced scary things in the Columbia City Jail.
Others say they felt like they were being watched, saw curtains move on their own, and even felt a shadowy ghost touching their shoulders or hands.
People working in the building heard strange sounds like scratching on the walls and the sound of footsteps inside.
Strange things have happened to people who visit the old jail. In the basement, people have felt really uncomfortable, and some say it is very cold there, even for a basement. There are also stories that people felt something like blood.
In the attic, a worker heard what sounded like someone talking, but he was alone. When he tried to leave, he saw a figure heading towards the basement, but it didn't look human at all. Strange isn't it?

ENVIRONMENT: 8/10 - Walking around the huge prison at night was amazing in itself! The atmosphere outside was also really cool, and I especially enjoyed the long scene they included at the end.
ACTING: 6/10 - The actors were full of energy, and I really enjoyed the characters moving around! There were some predictable lines, like cliche lines like "stay and play", but overall, it was great.
SCARE FACTOR: 7/10 - They didn't always solve all of our problems, but when they did, they did it really well! Although I would suggest shouting less loudly to scare people.
OVERALL: 8/10 - You should definitely check it out because the cool place it is in, and the scary things make it even more fun! I had a really good time!
Review By Some Peoples - Columbia City Haunted Jail:
First: I really enjoyed my first visit to this place! I'm only 13, but it was such an amazing experience that I really want to go back.
This was the part where a scary chainsaw guy chased me, and it was great! He came right in front of me and I loved it!
I totally recommend checking this place out. Now, I'm curious to work as a horror actor here, but I can't find an age limit anywhere. Also, I saw Bubbles the Joker, and he looked great with his makeup and everything!
Second: First of all, I want to say that this haunted attraction is one of the best places you can find. The building has a lot of history, and it really does feel haunted – you can feel a presence there without a doubt.
I really liked this building and also the fact that it is actually haunted. However, I thought the actors and the way the rooms were arranged weren't very creative for a haunted prison. I believe they can improve a lot and make this base even better.
It is unfortunate that the people in charge of this amazing prison don't have the money or creativity to make the haunted attraction as great as it could be.

Third: I'm not sure tonight was the best night to go to a haunted house. There were some issues, such as dark areas that were not interactive.
I understand that darkness is part of the horror experience, but it felt like something wasn't working right.
Maybe they were understaffed because there wasn't much fear. I'm not sure if it's worth trying or driving again. On a positive note, the basement was interesting.
Fourth: This place is amazing! While you're waiting in line, actors walk around and make it really fun. There's this fabulous vampire lady who continues to surprise me and my friends - so much fun!
My brother was both excited and scared. The basement is super scary! We plan to go every weekend this year. We hope the vampire lady remembers us.
